Datapoint: Kaiser to Acquire Geisinger Health

Kaiser Permanente on April 26 unveiled plans to acquire Geisinger Health, a large health system based in Northeast Pennsylvania. The two nonprofits will leverage the deal to launch a new entity, Risant Health, which aims to “expand and accelerate the adoption of value-based care in diverse, multi-payer, multi-provider, community-based health system environments.” Geisinger would be the first health system to join Risant if the Kaiser deal gains regulatory approval, but the larger goal would be to acquire “a portfolio of likeminded, nonprofit, value-oriented community-based health systems anchored in their respective communities,” the companies said. Geisinger also operates the ninth-largest insurer in Pennsylvania, Geisinger Health Plan, which currently serves 520,370 members in commercial, Medicare Advantage and managed Medicaid plans.
