Datapoint: Kaiser to Purchase Second Health System

Kaiser Permanente’s Risant Health on June 21 inked a deal to acquire Greensboro, N.C.-based health system Cone Health. “As part of Risant Health, Cone Health will build upon its long track record of success making evidence-based health care more accessible and affordable for more people,” Cone Health President and CEO Dr. Mary Jo Cagle said in a statement. The system will continue to operate independently and maintain its own branding if the deal goes through. Kaiser’s first Risant deal, the acquisition of Pennsylvania-based system Geisinger, closed in April. In addition to increasing Kaiser’s hospital markets, the Risant subsidiary’s goal is to expand access to value-based care. Cone Health also operates a small insurance unit alongside Novant Health, Care N’ Care Health Plan, which currently serves 16,930 Medicare Advantage members in North Carolina.
