Datapoint: New York Insurers Plot Merger

Lifetime Healthcare Co., the parent company of Excellus Blue Cross Blue Shield and Univera Healthcare, is planning a merger with fellow New York insurer Capital District Physicians Health Plan (CDPHP). The brands will continue to maintain separate identities post-merger, according to a May 22 press release. “As a physician founded and guided health plan, the CDPHP board of directors knew it was important that we find a health plan that puts patient care first,” Dr. Michael DeVito, CDPHP board chairman, said in a statement. “I am pleased to say that we have found a likeminded partner with The Lifetime Healthcare Companies.” The deal would grow Lifetime’s membership by about 375,000 lives, with the insurer ultimately serving more than 1.85 million people. Financial terms of the deal, which is subject to regulatory approval, were not disclosed.
