Datapoint: North Carolina Blues Strikes Urgent Care Deal

Blue Cross and Blue Shield of North Carolina last week inked a deal to acquire all North Carolina locations of FastMed, a chain of urgent care clinics that also offer primary care, telehealth and preventive care. The company has 55 North Carolina locations. “With approximately half of FastMed’s clinics located in rural areas of our state with limited access to health care resources, this is an important investment in North Carolina,” Blue Cross NC CEO Tunde Sotunde said in a statement. The Blues affiliate has been a non-controlling minority investor in FastMed since 2012, and the deal is expected to close in the first quarter of 2024. Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed. Blue Cross NC is the largest insurer in its home state, with 2,350,022 members.
