Datapoint: Ohio Selects Single Medicaid PBM

After a years-long crusade against the traditional PBM business model, Ohio on Jan. 11 named IT firm Gainwell Technologies as the single pharmacy benefits manager for the state’s Medicaid program. State officials estimate the move, which will pay Gainwell $158.2 million over the course of a 7.5-year contract, will save the Medicaid program $150 to $200 million annually. Ohio’s Medicaid MCOs previously contracted with large national PBMs, including Cigna Corp.’s Express Scripts and CVS Caremark, on an individual basis. CareSource, an Express Scripts partner, currently serves 52.4% of Ohio’s 2,504,237 managed Medicaid members.
