SOURCE/METHODOLOGY: All data is compiled from individual health insurance companies, state insurance department documents and U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission filings.

Health plans selected based on commercial medical risk enrollment as of the beginning of 2022, per AIS’s Directory of Health Plans. All publicly traded companies are included except Aetna, which was acquired by CVS Health Corp. in 2018.

NOTES: Arkansas, Alabama, Louisiana, Idaho, New Hampshire and South Dakota do not disclose compensation data for specific executives at health insurance companies. Washington D.C. redacted the compensation information for CEO and directors at AmeriHealth Caritas District of Columbia, Inc. California does not collect compensation data. At Vivek Garipalli’s own recommendation to Clover’s board of directors and in accordance with his employment agreement, Garipalli elected to forgo any compensation other than equity awards for 2021, 2020 and 2019. Andrew Witty became UnitedHealth Group Inc’s CEO in Feb. 3, 2021, replacing David Wichmann. Maurice Smith became president and CEO of Health Care Service Corporation effective June 1, 2020. Jared Short became Cambia Health Solutions, Inc.’s president and CEO in January 2021. Mugiishi became Hawaii Medical Service Association’s president and CEO in February 2020. Cory R. Harris became Wellmark, Inc.’s president and CEO starting Jan. 1, 2021. He previously served as chief operating officer. James Reed became Excellus Health Plan, Inc.’s president and CEO in 2021. Cain Hayes became Point32Health, Inc.’s CEO effective July 5, 2021. His sign-on payment was $908,162. Dana Erickson became Blue Cross Blue Shield of Minnesota’s CEO in October 2021. Marti Lolli became SelectHealth, Inc.’s CEO in July 2021. Praveen Thadani was appointed as Priority Health’s president in January 2021. Donald Antonucci became Providence Health Plan’s CEO in September 2021. Michael G. White served as president and interim CEO for the balance of 2021, earning $372,146.
