Two nonprofit health systems, Norfolk, Virginia’s Sentara Healthcare and Greensboro, North Carolina’s Cone Health, have ended their efforts to combine, according to a June 2 press release from Sentara. “Recently, in the final analysis, we mutually decided that we can best serve our communities by remaining independent organizations,” Cone Health CEO Terry Akin said in the release. Sentara, which operates a system of 12 hospitals, has a robust health insurance unit, currently serving 832,084 members in its Optima Health and Virginia Premier products. Cone Health operates a five-hospital system and has a smaller managed care business. Its wholly owned insurance unit, Care N’ Care Insurance Company of North Carolina, currently serves 29,492 Medicare Advantage members in its HealthTeam Advantage-branded plans.
