New-to-Market Blocks

FAQ

How long does a new-to-market block last?

Most NTMBs last 3–6 months, but some can extend up to 12 months, depending on the drug category, pricing, and availability of clinical data.

Are all NTMBs complete coverage blocks?

Not always. NTMBs can include:

  • Full coverage exclusion
  • Restricted coverage (e.g., medical necessity only)
  • Temporary prior authorization
  • Step therapy requirements
  • Quantity limits
How do NTMBs affect patient access?

NTMBs may delay access to new therapies until:

  • The payer completes a formal P&T review
  • Clinical criteria are established
  • The drug is placed on the formulary
This may result in temporary denials, additional paperwork, or appeals.
